Zygomatic implants are placed in the zygomatic bone (the region of the cheekbones in the face) in patients suffering from atrophy in the maxillary bone.
These implants measure between 30 and 60 mm in length, which makes them very different from a conventional implant, which measures about 18 mm at most.
When the person loses one or more teeth in the upper arch, the maxillary bone is reabsorbed, producing a loss of bone height and width. In edentulous patients (without teeth) who are in this condition for a long time, this resorption is considerable and makes it impossible to place a common implant. So zygomatic implants provide excellent aesthetic and functional results for this type of patient.
What type of patients need a zygomatic implant?
The candidates for this type of implants are people without the quantity or quality of maxillary bone, who cannot support conventional dental implants, patients who have suffered from periodontal diseases, older people who have been without their teeth for many years or have had bone loss extreme in the maxilla.
How are zygomatic implants placed?
This technique is performed by inserting the implant into the zygoma or cheekbone, without the need for bone grafting, and recovery takes approximately 24 to 72 hours.
This outpatient surgery is performed using conscious sedation or general anesthesia, a process carried out by our anesthesiologist Pilar Lastra.
In most cases, after 24 or 48 hours have elapsed, the patient is fitted with a temporary fixed dental prosthesis, said prosthesis is used by the patient for 3 or 4 months to later change it for a definitive fixed dental prosthesis. In the event that an immediate load cannot be carried out, the patient will be placed with a removable dental prosthesis, which will be used in the same way for 3 or 4 months.
It is essential that this type of treatment is carried out by a dentist specialized in oral and maxillofacial surgery and also to have a previous diagnosis where it is recommended what type of dental implant is the one that best suits the needs.
