L-PRF (Platelet Rich Fibrin and Leukocytes) is a three-dimensional combination of autologous platelet rich fibrin and leukocytes obtained from the patient's blood.
Its greatest advantage is that it is made through very simple clinical procedures, which result in the obtaining of a resistant and flexible fibrin matrix, which reduces possible immune reactions of rejection and the transmission of diseases by parenteral route.
This natural platelet-rich matrix accelerates the repair of soft and hard tissues. It has growth factors and cytokines that are derived from blood platelets and leukocytes.
What type of patients can this technique be applied to?
When the human being suffers a wound in the body, it automatically sends fibrin. However, in the cases of patients with circulatory or venous problems, the blood does not properly reach the areas farthest from the heart (where the blood is pumped), so it is very common for this type of patient to form chronic ulcers in lower extremities.
The presence of these proteins has shown that it is indicated to produce wound healing such as: burns, diabetic foot and chronic ulcers.
How is the treatment carried out?
It consists of extracting blood from several tubes and said blood without being manipulated in any way, inside the same tube that is collected, is placed in a special machine that is responsible for centrifuging the blood to separate its components in a specific way, where a 100% natural fibrin clot of a yellowish color is obtained from the patient and said clot is the one that is placed in the area to be treated.
How many L-PRF sessions are required to heal a wound?
Normally a treatment takes more than one application, since being a naturally guided regeneration, in the first session the area is cleaned and debrided, and the placement seeks to activate blood circulation in the site through stimulation of the blood vessels. Thus, the first application does not normally show a visible recovery of volume, but rather a radical change in the vascularity of the area, an ideal requirement to be able to reach and close an ulcer wound. In a second application, much more visible changes to the patient begin to be seen and a decrease in the dimension of the wound begins to be appreciated. The number of sessions will depend on the severity of the wound and its pathological conditions. On the other hand, the patient's commitment to treatment and family support are fundamental pillars to obtain the desired results.
Dr. Yelka Zamora is a pioneer in Costa Rica of the L-PRF technique and provides her services at Clínica Ruisánchez together with her husband Tonet Ruisánchez, owners of the medical center.
Dr. Zamora teaches courses to doctors and nurses who wish to expand their knowledge and address the issue of chronic wounds and burns through this great technique such as L-PRF. It contains a theoretical-practical segment and a second part with practice in patients.
