When a person cannot regulate the amount of glucose in the blood, this is known as diabetes. Diabetes can be caused by too little insulin production, insulin resistance, or both.
Insulin is a hormone produced by the pancreas to control blood glucose levels.
Diabetic patients are one of the most frequent clinical cases in the dental office, due to the high incidence of said disease in the current population.
What dental complications can a person with diabetes present?
The most common oral complication in people with diabetes is periodontal disease, or periodontitis (infection of the gums and bone). Periodontal disease can cause pain, bad breath, chewing difficulties and even tooth loss.
This oral disease is also present in non-diabetic people, however, the difference is that it must be treated in advance in patients with diabetes to maintain stricter control, taking into account that periodontal infection could alter glycemic control.
Therefore, it is essential that diabetic patients follow a more frequent and timely dental check-up than healthy patients, in order to prevent oral infections that may occur.
If you have diabetes, try to check your mouth regularly, in this way you will be able to detect any anomaly and consult in time. If, for example, you notice that your gums are swollen, if they bleed when brushing or flossing, if you notice white patches, pain, a bad taste in your mouth or excessive dryness, it is time for you to attend your dental consultation.
Remember that good blood glucose control is key to preventing and controlling mouth problems. Those who do not have timely control of blood glucose have gum disease more frequently and severely than those who do have their diabetes under control.
Do not forget these recommendations if you have diabetes: • Control your blood glucose level. • Brush your teeth 3 times a day. • Dental floss is the best ally to remove food debris that the brush cannot remove,
therefore, do not forget to use it at least twice a day. • Go to the dentist for evaluation periodically and do not forget to tell the dentist that
you have diabetes. • If you smoke, eliminate tobacco. It may seem very difficult, but the damage you will
do to your gums is worse, without forgetting that you increase the probability of
contracting a bacterial infection. • Check your mouth regularly, this way you will go to the dentist when you detect
that something is wrong. However, remember that it is best to consult before
feeling pain or suffering from any illness.
